Improve Home Comfort with a Humidifier

Residents of San Antonio are lucky to see snow every few years. The cold, rainy springs and autumns that surround the mild winters, however, make having an efficient heating system necessary. The downside is that once the furnace is turned on, the air in your home will rapidly dry out to unpleasant or even unsafe levels.

An easy way to keep the indoor moisture levels up is to purchase a small humidifier. Portable humidifiers are relatively inexpensive because they don’t require professional installation. However, they only replenish moisture in very small areas and lack any form of calibration.

Whole-house humidifiers require a larger commitment but are the easiest and most effective option. They are installed professionally and emit water vapor into the heating ducts as they circulate air around the house. The amount of mist is controlled by a thermostat.

Here are some reasons why using a whole-air humidifier will make your home more comfortable.

  • Setting the thermostat to a moisture level between 30 and 50 percent is satisfactory to most people. Humid air feels warmer than dry air, so you can lower your thermostat and save money without feeling cold.
  • Static electricity accumulates quickly when the air is dry. The shocks are unpleasant but harmless to living creatures. Data stored on your computer, telephone or other devices may not be as fortunate. Zapping a computer can kill the hard drive or corrupt the data.
  • Many asthmatics find extremely dry air to be painful to breathe, either because it trigger asthma attacks or because it will dry out the mucus membranes in the respiratory tract. This is not only uncomfortable but also reduces the effectiveness of immune system.
  • Dry air will leach moisture out of surface skin, creating painful cracks. Lotion will help provide a barrier but until the air is less dry, it will not fully resolve.
