How You Can Control Pollutants in Your Household

It’s an unwelcome fact of life that in most homes the air is far dirtier than just outside the door. And the fact that most people spend as much as 90 percent of their time inside makes this all the more alarming. Poor indoor air quality can have a profoundly negative impact on quality of life and health.

In large measure, dirty indoor air is a result of energy efficiency becoming a primary goal in home construction. Houses are built much more airtight than they used to be. While this is great for your utility bill and the health of the planet, it means that pollutants tend to accumulate unless there’s adequate ventilation to exchange contaminated indoor air with fresh outside air. Following are some effective ways to improve your indoor air quality:

Change the furnace or A/C filter — If you allow the air filter to become clogged with dirt and debris, the force of air pressure may blow pollutants right past the filter into your indoor air. Not to mention, a dirty air filter will force your HVAC system to work harder and use more energy than necessary. A monthly air filter check is recommended during heavy use seasons.

Remove sources of pollution — This means getting rid of household materials that contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Everything from air fresheners and cleaning solvents to rugs and furniture may contain VOCs. Look for natural replacements for products containing VOCs.

Improve ventilation — Your home must have an effective way to exchange dirty air with fresh air, such as exhaust fans in bathrooms and the kitchen, a whole-house fan, a balanced ventilation system (HRV/ERVs), or during mild weather natural ventilation (open the windows).

Dust and clean regularly.

Air cleaner — Whole-house air-cleaning systems are available that will work with your HVAC equipment to remove the vast majority of pollutants from your home. Portable air purifiers are available as well.
